South Dakota School of Mines and Technology

STEPS Engineering Camp for Boys - Middle School
June 7-12 or July 19-24, 2009-- Science Technology Engineering Preview Summer Camp (STEPS) for boys is a one-week introduction to the world of technology and engineering. Campers participate in hands-on activities that give them an understanding of what engineers do. Students will also explore science and engineering topics such as materials, clean manufacturing, CAD and team building. Boys will make a checkerboard and checkers during camp, and also get to try blacksmithing. Of course there is time for fun! The camp also includes a number of activities that may include swimming, pizza parties, a field trip, etc. Participants will experience dorm life, cafeteria food and learn what it is like to be on a college campus. Scholarships are available for this camp!

Explosives Camp
June 29-July 1, 2009-- Students participating in this camp will learn about the science behind explosives and how engineers apply explosive forces to break rock to unearth precious minerals from the ground. Students will explore the world of math, physics, and chemistry through explosives. Students will be given an up close and personal view by trained explosives experts. Scholarships may be available based on financial need and academic performance!

Youth Geology Field Camp for High School
June 14-19, 2009-- This camp provides an understanding of the earth. How does it work? Some things that you will do and learn: minerals, rocks and fossils, basic Geology, learn to use topographic maps, learn to read compass, understand geologic maps, understand water, landslides, and earthquakes, learn geology of the Black Hills, live the life of a field geologist for five days, understand making of mountains and landforms, know about volcanoes and magmas, collect minerals, rocks and fossils. Scholarships are available and based on financial need or academic performance!

Socket to Me! Computer Camp for Girls
June 7-12, 2009-- This camp provides a hands-on approach to learn computer science and computer engineering. Some things students will learn: the importance of becoming computer literate, computer basics, how to disassemble and reassemble a computer, PC maintenance, basic programming, Web programming, and basic electronics. Socket to Me! gives students a chance to experience college life. Students will have a roommate, eat in the cafeteria, visit the library, work in the computer labs, and go on field trips to see computers in action at local industries. Scholarships are available and based on financial need or academic performance!
